Android Market to shut down on June 30th
Google and Android fans who have watched the company and used their products over the years know that some platforms seem to get cut down despite being popular. In some cases though, Google products hang on long after you may have thought about them. In an announcement today, Google notified the world that they would be ending support for the Android Market effective June 30th. For those who are not aware, Android Market was the forerunner to Google Play.
There are likely to be few tears shed over this announcement. Android Market was only being used for devices running Android 2.1 Eclair or older. Yes, the letter E was quite a few versions in the past after launching 7 years ago. Android Eclair is so old that it does not even show up on the Android distribution charts, which explains why so few developers are even continuing to maintain support for such an old version. In all likelihood, anyone who may still be running Android 2.1 Eclair is probably not visiting the Android Market to grab the latest game anyway and if they do need to install some new app they can still sideload them.
Google notes that when Android Market shuts down, users will not get any kind of notification on their device due to “technical restrictions in the original Android Market app.” So if you know of anyone running a device with Android 2.1 Eclair, you might want to tip them off to make a run on the Android Market for any apps on their wishlist before June 30th.
