Apple iPhone 8 may sport a 3D laser for AR usage

Apple has been working feverishly hard on its upcoming iPhone 8 -- not only on the face scanning feature but also a rear-facing 3D laser sensor. According to the Fast Company website, this feature will help enhancing the augmented reality and rear camera autofocus experience.

The 3D laser system is reportedly manufactured by VSCEL laser system. The technology's integration on the iPhone 8 depends on the pace of Apple engineers. For now, the ARKit introduced by Apple at the WWDC 2017 conference, depends on a single rear camera to measure the real world object and overlay animations on it. The laser system is said to dramatically improve the AR experience. The report adds that the VSCEL laser systems cost about $2 per phone.

As for the autofocus, it has been revealed that the laser system will send out light beams that bounce off objects to deliver precise depth of field. Companies like Google, Huawei, OnePlus and Asus already use laser autofocus systems in the smartphones. The current iPhone models use something called as the Phase Detection Autofocus, which was introduced with the iPhone 6 in 2014.

For now it looks like Apple's woes are mounting as the expected release date of its iPhone 8 draws close. Recent reports have suggested that the company is under pressure to choose if it wants to include the fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 8 or not. An apparent delay in decision making could result in a delayed launch.

The company is also reportedly facing issues related to software, wireless charging and 3D face scanning. If the software glitches are not fixed on time, the firm could launch the handset with certain features disabled, which could be added with a firmware update.
