iPhone 8's NFC feature may be used for other tasks than just Apple Pay

Apple may unlock new NFC features with the upcoming iPhone 8. The new NFC features are spotted inside the iOS 11, which is likely to debut with the Apple iPhone 8. As spotted by Macrumours, iOS 11 enables apps to detect Near Field Communication or NFC tags.

This means that iPhone 8 users will be able to perform more functions using NFC, instead of just Apple Pay. The expanded feature lets the handset prompt a "Ready to Scan" dialog box, after which users would need to hold the iPhone near the item with NFC tag. Once detected, the display then shows a check box. An app with Core NFC will then be able to provide the related details.

Cybersecurity company WISeKey has announced that its CapSeal smart tag will support the iPhone as it will now use Core NFC. The firm, in a press release said, "When placed on a bottle of spirit or a bottle of lubricant oil, for instance, and tapped by an NFC phone, the chip is able to securely authenticate and track the bottle like an ePassport does. It offers the same certified security level. It also allows the brand to broadcast personalized messages to the phone-holder detecting whether the bottle has been open or not."

Core NFC is said to be supported only by the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

Talking about iOS 11 capabilities, Apple last week released the 3rd iOS 11 beta for developer testing. It also released the 3rd beta versions of the tvOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. The OS versions come with certain bug fixes and improvements, redesigned interface and a few more changes.

The iOS 11 developer beta 3 is available for eligible iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models. It brings new features which were showcased during the WWDC 2017 conference last month. The developer beta 3 comes with drag-and-drop feature, along with a redesigned multi-tasking interface, for the iPad. There is also a customisable control centre among other enhancements and stability improvements. You have to be registered as a developer to get the new OS version.
